Diego Velazquez came around the 17th century and his work included some notable portraits and his skills at capturing people accurately and with passion was one of his main assets. Pope Innocent X is a major painting to have come from his career and there were several other interesting portraits alongside that as well including Infante Balthasar Carlos in Hunting Dress and a powerful version of Crucifixion.
Las Meninas continues to spearhead Velazquez's achievements and Velazquez paintings from a long career which featured several different topics and content as this was an artist who wanted to challenge himself as much as possible and make the most of his undoubted ability. Many major names in the art world will stick to a method that proves successful and rarely move away from that but fortunately Diego was no such person and wanted to create a career which was rich and varied.
There is now a huge interest in reproductions of Velazquez paintings and these generally come in the form of art prints or posters, with many of his works best served in traditional style homes, as that is more suited to the type of work that was involved in the Baroque approach, which came about soon after the end of the Renaissance period.
